PRESERVING A PIECE OF SYRACUSE’S HISTORY

THE MANSION ON JAMES

The Mansion on James is one of less than 100 locations in Onondaga County, listed on The National Register of Historic Places.  We are the home of the George & Rebecca Barnes Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving The Mansion on James and its rich history.

The Mansion is more than a historic building. It tells the story of a way of life from days gone by. It’s a beautiful piece of Syracuse history, filled with intricate architectural detail and it is the only remaining James Street mansion that is open to public for tours.

Interact with The Mansion – take a historical tour, come to one of our fundraising events to preserve the building and grounds, volunteer as a groundskeeper or docent, or join our foundation as a member.  Looking to rent the Mansion for an elegant wedding, dinners, or business meetings?  Sign up as a member and our team will help you plan your next event.

All proceeds go to the George & Rebecca Barnes Foundation to preserve this important piece of Syracuse history.

The Last of The Great James St. Mansions

Mansion on James was built by George and Rebecca Barnes in 1853 and it became a center of civic-minded activity in our community.  Today the Mansion is the home of the George & Rebecca Barnes Foundation, which was established as a non-profit historical organization to preserve and maintain The Mansion as a community treasure.  Its focus is to educate the public about the history of the building and its owners and its place in Central New York history.

The Barnes Foundation runs The Mansion today, sustained by members, donors and grants.

The home housed The Corinthian Foundation and Corinthian Club, a wildly popular private women’s social club from 1964 to 2008 and was also the original home of LeMoyne College classes, beginning in 1946.
